Storyline Overwhelm the Sky

Eddie Huntly, an east coast radio personality, moves to San Francisco to marry Thea, the sister of his best friend Neil, a successful entrepreneur. Shortly before Eddie's arrival, Neil is found murdered in what the police surmise was a simple mugging gone awry. As the sullen Eddie steps in as interim host of his old friend Dean's late-night talk-radio show, he obsessively makes regular visits to the forested spot where Neil's corpse was found. One such visit unleashes a chain of unpredictable events that sends Eddie snooping into the life of a sleepwalking drifter with a mysterious past.

It is a quality found in American film. The subjects of Overwhelm the Sky move in the vast spaces of an entire continent. And in spite of the spaces which punctuate the story — the bridge over the water, the vistas, the flats and fields, the sky — Kremer’s main character is trapped, closed in. He is suffocating.

Billed as “An Existential Epic Neo-Noir,” Overwhelm the Sky loosely adapts and updates Charles Brockden Brown’s 1799 novel Edgar Huntly, or Memoirs of a Sleepwalker, one of the earliest novels written in the newly formed United States of America.

That’s the type of film that “Overwhelm the Sky” is. The technical mastery on display is simply astounding; the stunning black-and-white noir is exactly what it appears to be. More importantly, the characters that inhabit this film aren’t any more or less than what they appear to be.

Overwhelm The Sky is at least 10 minutes too long, and the opening title sequence does not impart a good first impression. But, if you can stick with the movie, thanks to a great screenplay, impressive direction, and (mostly) naturalistic performances, there is a lot to enjoy about this subdued mystery.

Overwhelm the Sky is inevitably descended from a host of San Francisco touchstones, which in this case adds to one’s viewing pleasure.
