Storyline La Ceremonie
Sophie, a quiet and shy maid working for the upper-class family Lelievre, hides her illiteracy under the cloak of a perfect household and obedience. She finds a friend in the energetic and uncompromising postmaster Jeanne, who encourages her to stand up against her bourgeois employers. Things start to escalate as the Lelievres find out that Sophie can't read and has brought Jeanne into their house against their wish.Movie details

La Cérémonie is a 1995 crime drama film by Claude Chabrol, adapted from the novel A Judgement in Stone by Ruth Rendell.The film echoes the case of Christine and Lea Papin, two French maids who brutally murdered their employer's wife and daughter in 1933, as well as the 1947 play they inspired, The Maids by Jean Genet.
Many years after these, "La cérémonie" is a serene work, the construction of a mature man who avoids making artificial judgments or explaining motivations of his characters, and tending traps to his audiences to keep them interested in what he's narrating.
The French have a name for the events leading up to a death by guillotine. They call it "the ceremony." Although Claude Chabrol's "La Ceremonie" (1995) contains no guillotines, there is a relentless feeling to it, as if the characters are engaged in a performance that can have only one outcome. It comes as a surprise to all of them, and to us.
I enjoyed "La Ceremonie" and I wasn't particularly bothered that I had purchased the movie thinking it was something it wasn't. The problem for me was the several references of Chabrol (in reviews of his movies) as the "Gallic [French] Hitchcock".
This French tragicomedy takes place in a remote chateau owned by a wealthy family. To help keep it up, they hire an introverted young woman as a maid. She ends up changing their lives forever.
"La Ceremonie," he has said, is a Marxist film about class struggle, but perhaps it is more of a Freudian film, about the scarcely repressed sexuality of Jeanne and Sophie, and the ways it is expressed against a family that represents for both of them a hated authority. Advertisement
